Surveys

Using our newly-developed systems, we can keep track of an item’s history, documenting its age, condition (past and present) and treatments and including full surveys and photographs. This enables us to gather a clear record of its conservation and the direction and variety of its ongoing care.

Cleaning

There are many things which can affect a carpet or textile, attacking its fabric or accelerating its demise (eg: glue, mould, excessive light, damp, infestation, smoke damage, dirt, food, grease etc). So these things don’t shorten their lives, we are able to offer a range of options to bring them back to life.

Repairs

We have a team of skilled and qualified experts, hugely experienced, to be called upon to mend carpets and fabrics to the highest standards. They are capable of the most intricate work, producing astonishing results, even in the most moth-eaten of pieces.

Project management

We offer a full project management service, from initial consultation to final re-install and everything in between; overseeing tenders and bringing together relevant teams to ensure a smooth operation from start to finish.

Consultation

We meet the client for examination of an item and to propose treatments, work out budgets and, where relevant, suggest preventative measures which might be undertaken by household staff.

Preventive conservation

Where required, we intervene to stop potential problems occurring in vulnerable pieces. For example, when an item is housed in a very humid building or when there is wear from excessive footfall.

Removal & storage

We have developed and adopted techniques to ensure safe removal, transport and storage of clients’ items. We have yet to be defeated, even by some of the nation’s largest and heaviest carpets.

Testing

Using modern techniques, and chemicals designed to be gentle on delicate fabrics, we can detect where any damage is coming from. Improvements are constantly being made in this field and we work hard to make sure we are familiar with the most up-to-date methods available, to ensure the best possible service.

Pest Control

Freezing is a form of pest control as it kills off infestations and the eggs of invading insects. It is possible to use other treatments depending on circumstances, including diatomaceous earth or permethrin.

Teaching & training

Both Heather and Jonathan are experienced speakers on conservation issues and gives talks to conservators, curators and other interested parties to pass on their skills and knowledge. The Tetley Workshop also offers work to apprentices to further their training.
